Tips for Winterizing Your Lawn Mower

Tips for winterizing your lawn mower
by Nick Guthrie, Turf & Equipment Specialist

Add a fuel stabilizer, especially if you have a metal tank. You can also drain the tank if made of plastic (Generally 1 oz. of stabilizer per 2.5 gallons of gas.) Run the mower then for about 10 minutes to work the stabilizer into the fuel, the carburetor, etc.

Remove the blade using a good, heavy glove, or a block to keep the blade from spinning. Refer to the owners manual for the proper wrench size.Wash the underside of the mower being sure to remove all debris. Make sure you dry the underside thoroughly to prevent rust.

Assess the blade. Sharpen by hand or by using a grinding wheel. Make sure the blade is balanced when finished. You can purchase a balancing kit at your local hardware store. If the blade is in rough shape, it is probably best to purchase a new one.

Assess all exterior metal parts for rust. You can remove the rust with a wire brush or piece of sandpaper.

Check the air filter. If your filter is paper, you can use an air compressor to clean it. If your paper is foam, you can wash it with soap and water. If it is in bad shape, just replace it.

Check your spark plug. Refer to the owners manual for proper wrench size for removing the spark plug. Make sure it is not dirty or clogged. Replace if necessary.

Check the oil. Make sure it is at the proper level. Change the oil if necessary.

Refer to the owners manual for the full service schedule.
